Home Improvement Tools – Are You Equipped With the Right Tools to Take Care of Your Home?

You can add value to your property by undertaking extensive home improvement projects which include getting your house re-painted, renovating bathrooms, revising design of your kitchen and construction of terraces and balconies. Even after completion of these projects, you would require a number of home improvement tools to maintain your house.

From trivial repairs to major overhauling, a number of maintenance challenges will come your way as a home owner, but if you have all the gear in the bag, you can afford to relax. If you are planning to buy some home improvement tools, you better read a brief description of what type of equipment you may require.

Cutting:

Cutting tools are meant to cut different types of materials and need to be manufactured with strong materials. Cutting tools form an essential part of your home improvement tools kit. A utility knife is perhaps the most popular cutting tool as it can cut a number of materials such as paper, wood, plastic and metals in half. The fact that it is easy to handle makes it an essential tool for your home improvement projects. Another useful tool is a hacksaw, which can be useful in cutting wood, bones and hard materials. It consists of a saw with delicate yet very sharp teeth and a blade framed in metal. A tile-cutter tool can also be of your utility if you have plans of changing design of your bathrooms. This tool helps shape ceramic tools in whatever way you like and is a necessity when it comes to bathroom improvement projects.

Garden:

A house with a beautiful lawn looks very attractive, but it takes a number of garden tools to maintain a lawn. Garden tools serve the purpose of planting, cutting grass and other related agricultural works. You will find garden tools in two types, namely, manual tools and power run tools. As part of your home improvement tools kit, you should buy garden tools such as a lawn mower, a spade, a garden hoe, a garden fork and a rake.

Moving:

Moving heavy objects around is often a troublesome stage in home improvement projects. For a smooth sailing during this particular stage, you would require moving tools which are designed to move objects. Some common moving tools include a hammer, a screwdriver, pliers and a wrench. A furniture dolly can be very handy to move heavy objects like boxes and furniture as you can place the object on its flat wooden surface and wheel the dolly to transport the object. Another very useful tool is a stair-roller that helps move objects up or down the stairs.

Transforming:

Large-scale home improvements often require the services of transforming tools. Common transforming tools include blow-torch and chemical sprays with solvent properties. While a blow-torch is used to bend and shape metals by producing extreme heat, chemical sprays change objects through chemical reactions.

Measurement:

Home improvement projects include accurate measurements which are impossible to take unless you use measurement tools. The most popular measurement tool is tape measure that comes in various materials such as cloth, optical fiber, plastic and metal. With the help of this useful tool you can make sure that windows and doors have accurate and equal dimensions. A few other measurement tools that you may be interested to include in your home improvement tools are rulers, calipers, squares, a theodolite and spirit level.

Shaping:

When it comes to giving final touches to an object during home improvement, you will require shaping tools. These tools are used to give shapes to objects such as wood and other materials. Chisels, trowels, moulds, sanders and jigs are some common shaping tools that you may need in your tool kit.

Fastening:

Unlike the cutting tools, fastening tools are used to join objects. With the help of specialized tools such as rivet guns, glue guns, wire tackers and staple guns you can join two objects, irrespective of whether they are made of the same material or not.

Power Tools:

Power tools are power-driven with the help of electric motors, air motors or combustion engines which are inwardly operative. Home improvement on a large-scale requires a number of works to be done with the help of power tools. Common power tools are drills, electric sanders and lathe. There are broadly two kinds of power tools, namely, static and mobile tools.

After finding out about the most frequently used home improvement tools, you are in a better position to buy the best equipment that can take care of your home maintenance. A good way to go about shopping for home improvement tools will be to go online.

3 Tips for Storing Home Improvement Tools

Are you intending to do a mini renovation of your house? Be it a full scale renovation or a small one, you need some handy tools to help you out. Selecting the right tools is extremely important as they can make everything seem so easy. From a simple handheld drill driver to a saw, you need to get the best out of them. After all the renovations have been completed, you do not simply throw the tools away. Some of them can cost quite a fair bit of money. You need to store them in the correct place to ensure that they are kept in the best condition possible. Let’s discuss some protection tips on how to store these awesome tools.

Glues

Glues are an indispensable part of any home improvement tools and you need them especially when you are trying to decorate your home. However, glue tends to dry up rather easily and once they are hardened, it becomes practically useless. Glues will harden even if they are not opened. Always store glue products in a cool and dry place as heat will cause the polymers to start crosslinking with each other, causing them to gel up and harden. You need to remember to keep glue in an upright position. Some people also tend to store glue in a refrigerator and there have been amazing results from that.

Handheld driller

A handheld driller is a convenient way to add fixtures to your home. With more families being much more cost conscious nowadays, many people tend to purchase furniture that are not fixed. As a result, they will need to fix it up themselves which gives them the flexibility. After usage, the handheld driller needs to be stored in a place that is cool and dry place. Always remove the batteries prior to storage so that the battery acid does not leak out. A cool and dry place is needed due to the electrical components in the driller as well as the steel drill bits. A hot and moisture rich place will cause corrosion to accelerate and replacing a drill bit costs a lot of money.

Nail gun

You cannot do without a nail gun if you need to hang pictures on the wall or putting together furniture. Although a hammer can do the job as well, it can cause damages to the furniture. Nail guns embed nails inside the intended object at an alarming speed, saving time and effort from other options such as hammering. Over time and environmental factors, the components inside the nail gun will start to corrode. This can lead to poorer results when using the nail gun. As such, you need to store nail guns in a place that is also dry and cool to slow down the corrosion process. You should also oil the gun after each use with a lubricant. Oil lubricants will reduce friction build up within the components and acts as a protective layer to prevent corrosion.

Most home improvement tools need to be stored in a place that is cool and dry to prevent premature corrosion and failure of the tools. Some of the tools do not come cheap so you should always store them in the correct place so that they can serve you for a longer time.

Franchisor gears up for festive season with new look

Bed & Couch franchises throughout the country are busy preparing for what operators believe will be a very busy festive season.

Bed & Couch franchises throughout the country are busy preparing for what operators believe will be a very busy festive season.
Apart from raising stock levels, the bed and couch specialist franchisor company has initiated a nationwide training and awareness campaign, based on the promotion of fresh look and feel and business concept. Two flagship pilot franchisee stores, in Watermeyer, Pretoria, and in Tzaneen, already display the new group’s corporate look and feel, complete with bold new logos and marketing collateral.

Says John Rogers, group chairman, “This is a competitive market and we are acutely aware of the fact that consumers want – and thoroughly deserve – quality and value for money. Our image reflects the stability and security associated with a strategic investment in quality, affordable and practical bedroom and home furniture”.

He says that the group wants people to be aware of the alternative that the franchise chain provides in the form of expert knowledge and competitive.

Herman Botha, the group’s national franchise manager says the 2007 festive season is a critical period for the company.

“The festive period is a time when most people review their existing infrastructure and make plans to invest in new merchandise. Given that more franchises are being opened at the same time, it will be a test for the company and the efficiency of our overall operation,” says Botha.

The focus, he says, is on ensuring the company’s HR component is fully able to implement the new look and feel and to this end, product knowledge and customer service levels are two of the key areas of focus.

“Our short term objective is two fold – we would like to bring to the attention of customers that we do have a complete range of beds and bedroom accessories, as well as couches, available, and that they can take advantage of specials during the festive season under the banner of a brand new Bed & Couch image,” says Botha.

Luxury and refinement flood back to Franschhoek following water-damage revamp 29 Se

We took advantage of the flood damage to properties in Franschhoek to inveigle a return invitation to one of my favourite hotels, Le Quartier Francais.
Luxury and refinement flood back to Franschhoek following water-damage revamp
What’s new is the front section of the hotel is fully reconfigured to now have the bar which is also stocked with handmade cordials and a fabulous range of iced-coffee cocktails as you enter the hotel.

Dining options are now at the luminous Tasting Room which Grande Chef Margot Janse continues to preside over to local and international acclaim while the tappas-style options previously enjoyed at The Common Room are now available in The Living Room. This broad term describes an equally broad range of spaces: The Garden Room, where breakfast is served is now a glass-enclosed space that opens into the garden. I love the flooring which looks and feels like wood but is ceramic tiling and the beautifully hewn timber tables that bring an earthiness to the space. Colourfully upholstered dining chairs contrast with bistro timber chairs.

Luxury and refinement flood back to Franschhoek following water-damage revamp
There is comfy seating as well as tables and chairs street-side too and one can be fed or watered wherever you wish. We asked Four Quarters butler Themba Ncube to bring items from The Living Room menu to us at courtyard-enclosed pool at Four Quarters. We also enjoyed Lady Bonim’s teas in The Reading Room, sandwiched between the new bar and the Garden Room. Nespresso coffees are served in the suites as well as in the Living Room.

There’s a petit Le Creuset pop-up shop as you enter the hotel and LQF have incorporated their crockery into the rooms and in The Living Room. Resident guests get 10% off purchases at the shop via a personalised discount coupon, a very elegant an clever way to provided added value to guests and to market the store.

The B.Gorgeous day spa is another new addition. Quaff LQF sister wine farm’s Môreson bubbly while being coffiured as part of your offering. Manis, Pedis and other spa staples are also available.

The Bacon Bar, a zany on-trend eatery is a treat that I’m sorry I missed. For the moment they’re only open during the day and not on Mondays or Tuesdays when I was around and free. Although I don’t eat sugar, the idea of a bacon chocolate brownie is more compelling than I hoped it would be.

More colourful

Luxury and refinement flood back to Franschhoek following water-damage revamp
There seems to be more colour around the hotel than I remember previously and I like how it makes everything seem that much less formal and more fun. The luxury here is in the quality. I remember first experiencing corduroy covered couches in the Cape Grace’s Presidential suites and LQF has them in Four Quarters 3. We actually loved the texture of corduroy upholstery so much that we covered our home furniture in it. I mention this because LQF is the kind of hotel and interior that appears to be furnished by elegant and well-traveled owner Susan Huxter rather than a team of decorators and it looks how I would elect to decorate my home. Perhaps this is why I love this spot so much.

The most enchanting garden grows around the pool area in front of the main hotel and is the route that guests walk from the guest-only parking area and reception to the restaurants. Four Quarters guests also have the benefit of this garden tour, a special treat in spring when flower buds are heavy with bees.

This is the kind of establishment that peels tomatoes before putting them on your plate. It might be a small thing but it says heaps about the upscale experience you can expect to have.

Mama Mio… the three-dimension inspiration campaign

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN: Home furniture store, Mio, brought its catalogue to life with a handy 3D mobile app.
Mama Mio… the three-dimension inspiration campaign
There is no question that Mio is second to IKEA when it comes to Sweden’s furniture and home accessory stores. However, its smaller budget and dealer organisational structure make it difficult for the brand to try something “out of the box” on a large scale. In addition, while consumers and the marketing channels have changed, Mio couldn’t abandon the classic television and daily morning newspapers that they had relied on as communication vehicles for years.

Instead, it needed to find a new way to get people talking about Mio again. Of the US$193.4m Mio generates in sales, 86% comes from customers who receive the Mio catalogue, which remains the most important tool they have.

Furniture consumers have usually made up their minds about what they want to buy even before stepping foot in a store and because buying furniture for the home is an extremely personal purchase, people discuss design and style with friends and family long before they spend a penny. Consumers actively communicate through digital channels such as social networks, e-mail and mobile phone applications, so Mio committed to a micro-budget in order to utilise these channels.

The strategy had to be specific and on the mark because there was no room financially for a massive push. They decided to give current and potential consumers, as well as interior design enthusiasts, more inspiration and opportunities to find the right furniture and accessories for their homes. Putting a tangible visual in front of consumers made it far more likely that they would visit the store, and from there the product was as good as sold.

The idea was to bring the catalogue to life with a mobile app that showed people what Mio furniture looked like in their homes from the comfort of their sofas. Not only did the app put the entire Mio catalogue on people’s iPhones, but it featured a 3D augmented reality function that let people test-furnish their properties to see exactly how chosen pieces of furniture would look in various different rooms.

Results

This move was a refreshing approach to a familiar technique and increased engagement, improved the personal experience and expanded the potential for loyalty within the marketplace.

More than 60 000 people used the online banner catalogue and 3000 extra print catalogues were ordered online.

The App earned a place in the top 10 of the Best iPhone Apps in the Lifestyle category shortly after being launched

With a turnover in excess of 7 billion Euros from its famous international brands, Ferrero Rocher, Tic-Tac, Kinder and Nutella, Ferrero came out tops in the study that polled the reputations of more than 1,300 companies worldwide.

Over 70,000 online interviews with the general public in 32 countries were conducted during January and February this year. Runners up in the category, Best Reputations Among the Largest 600 Companies in the World, were IKEA and Johnson & Johnson.

“Based on perceptions in their home countries, Italian confectioner Ferrero, Swedish home furniture producer IKEA, and the US consumer product giant Johnson & Johnson enjoy the most trust, admiration, good feeling and overall esteem in he world,” states the survey report.

Ferrero had the highest overall reputation pulse score of 85.17 and the highest rating of all for Products/Services (88.96), Governance (82.71) and Citizenship (81.16). The family owned global confectioner was also the only company to be ranked in the top five of all seven categories on which the reputation survey was based, “which explains why the Italians trust, admire and feel good about this company.”

The survey conducted by the Reputation Institute, a global private advisory and research firm specialising in corporate reputation management, found that products/services followed by governance and citizenship had the most bearing on a company’s reputation. Financial performance and leadership also increased in importance in the 2009 survey.

“The public wants to see the companies lead the way with strong visions and stable performance,” says the survey report.

Corporate trust was found to be a bigger factor in emerging markets than in industrialised markets.

“Proportionally, the largest companies in Brazil, Russia, India and China enjoy a stronger emotional connection with consumers than the largest companies in the industrialised world,” says the report, which advises multi-national corporations to be wary of local competitors and to focus on building stronger relationships with consumers in these markets.

Ferrero has embarked on a long-term commitment to grow its South African interests through is local subsidiary, Ferrero Ithemba SA. Even with the downturn in the economy, this should have a positive impact on job creation, local manufacture and the development of raw materials. Ferrero has established a new 9,000m2 confectionery factory in Walkerville, south of Johannesburg. The company is also planning to cultivate locally over one million hazelnut trees to create a hazelnut industry in South Africa, which will in time ensure SA plays a role in the production of the Ferrero brands.

A wholly family owned business, the Ferrero Group currently has 36 operating companies, 15 factories and approximately 19,600 employees worldwide. The Ferrero principles of quality, innovation and technology supported by a deep rooted social conscience, have been instilled into the growing operations in South Africa with sites firmly set on other African markets in the future.

Kitchen Furniture: Ideas For A Kitchen Island

Today’s kitchen island is a far cry from the basic medieval food preparation table, but still serves the same purpose. It is now a significant item of kitchen furniture that can accommodate sinks, faucets, waste disposal units and even racks, drawers and cabinets for your cooking utensils and tools.

Even in smaller kitchens people are examining the possibilities that could arise by clearing away the traditional kitchen cabinets, and replacing them with kitchen islands that offer the same amount of walking space if not more. Here are some ideas for a kitchen island that is not plumbed in to serve a sink, but that offers a great deal of storage space and can effectively make your kitchen appear larger.

The following are just a few of the benefits you can get get from a kitchen island:
• Increased workspace
• Storage for cutlery and cooking utensils
• Seating and eating areas
• Provide a working surface for food preparation
• Incorporate a waste bin

There are many more benefits according to how you use this type of kitchen furniture. However, before making the decision to purchase a kitchen island, you have some important factors to take into consideration, not the least of which is space.

Space and Design are Important
You need around 3 feet of walking space around the island unit, and you must be sure that the drawers and doors in the cabinets have room to open. If you maintain the three feet, them that should be fine. The only dimension that must be stated is that of the counter height. Ideally it should be the same as the rest of your kitchen units. It’s not a complete disaster if levels vary, but it can be a bit disconcerting at times when working on surfaces that vary in height.

Another problem you might face if you buy your kitchen island as a separate unit, and not as part of the overall kitchen, is matching it to your existing cabinets. This might not be as easy as your think, but if you purchase a solid color, such as black, white or red, then you should get away with it.

Regarding colors and designs, kitchen islands can be made from a number of different materials. The framework of the island is generally wood, although the counter surface can be metal or even granite – granite is a popular substance used for counter tops. While stainless steel is another excellent material for a counter top, aluminum is too soft – it may be OK for a sink, but it is easily scratched and dented, so avoid it for kitchen counter tops.

Consider the Services
If you need a power supply for appliances, you can run it up through a pipe or conduit up to the ceiling, or even better, run a line below the floorboards up into the kitchen island. Make sure your installation conforms to local and national regulations. You should use an proper electrician for this an not try to do it yourself.

Many islands are fitted with burners and sinks with a hot and cold water supply, but this is not essential if you already have a traditional sink and stove. There are many different designs of pot hooks or racks that can be used on or above your island. Many people fit hooks to the ceiling to hold cooking pans of different types, but that will depend on the height of your ceiling.

Mind Your Head!
If you have hooks on the ceiling to hang pans and other items from, make sure that you have enough head room to avoid people banging their heads on longer items such as frying pans or skillets! Clearance is all-important with kitchen islands, because there is not a lot worse than having a kitchen that is severely restricted in space just to accommodate an island. The island should complement your kitchen, not dominate it.

Safety First!
You are better off without it if you are using up all the free space in the room. You should always have a good traffic space in your kitchen, because it can sometimes be dangerous if you are cramped for space – in fact it can be dangerous if you are. Yes, a kitchen island is good to have, but not if your safety and freedom of movement are compromised to accommodate it.

A kitchen island can be a useful item of kitchen furniture, but it must serve a purpose and must not be restrictive. With these comments in mind, a kitchen island can transform a dull kitchen, and you will certainly love showing your friends an neighbors your new item of kitchen furniture.

Elements Of Interior Design

Whether you are working with existing furnishings and fabrics or “starting from scratch” with an empty room, you should always use the elements and principles of design as a guide in choosing everything. The elements are your tools or raw materials, much like paints are the basics to a painter. The elements of design include space, line, form, color, and texture. The principles of design relate to how you use these elements and are balance, emphasis, rhythm, proportion and scale, and harmony and unity.

Element #1: Space
Space defines the boundaries and sets the limits on the functional and decorative things you can do. Usually you will not determine the space; instead, you will be faced with the challenge of using the existing space effectively.

Element #2: Line
The lines in a room are second only to color in importance when it comes to setting the overall mood or feeling of a room. The lines of window fashions should support the dominant line of the room. In most situations, the dominant line is straight (vertical, horizontal or diagonal) rather than curved. Your choice of emphasizing the direction of lines will determine the mood you want to create.
• Vertical lines add height and dignity, creating a more formal atmosphere. Vertical lines also balance the horizontal lines found in most furniture.
• Horizontal lines tend to create a restful, informal feeling. They work well in casual rooms or as relief to the strong verticals of formal rooms.
• Diagonal lines attract attention and lead the eye. They can be disturbing unless supported by verticals or opposing diagonals.
• Curved lines add a softening effect and keep the room from becoming too stiff. Use curved lines with some restraint to keep the room from becoming too soft and overly feminine.

Element #3: Form
Lines that join together produce the form, or shape, of an object, which in turn impacts the overall feeling of a room. Straight lines create rectangles, square and triangles. Curved lines form circles and ovals. The rectangle is the most popular form and is often the dominant shape in a room. Triangles provide stability and curved shapes soften the contours of objects.

Element #4: Color
More than any other element, color can make a room beautiful. Color can set the mood. It can make a room warmer or cooler, larger or smaller. It can hide unsightly features or call attention to the center of interest. Even with the simplest furnishings, the proper use of color can transform a room.

Element #5: Texture
Texture is playing an increasingly important role in home decorating. Visual texture is a material’s apparent smoothness or roughness. To maintain and enhance a casual feeling, use fabrics that are more heavily textured, nubby or rough visual texture. Smooth, shiny surfaces such as silk, moiré, chintz and silk-like looks support a more formal feeling in a room. Using several levels of complementary textures adds variety and maintains interest. However, it is a good idea to avoid dramatic contrasts in texture.

Popular Kirby Cleaning System Features And Benefits

When people visualize top quality upright residential vacuum cleaners, the Kirby is amongst the principal premium quality vacuum cleaners given. I’m not a Kirby dealer, am not employed by the company, and do not market new Kirby vacuum cleaners. Finally this is a real evaluation from an unbiased expert in the vacuum cleaner trade. Read more to spot the good points and bad points.

The Kirby vacuum cleaner is made in Cleveland Ohio and continues to be for practically a century. It stays amongst the highest selling well made vacuum cleaners sold in peoples homes until today. The latest version of this admired and talked about cleaning system is the Ultimate G9 Limited Diamond Edition Upright Home Cleaning System. Do not forget -, not a vacuum cleaner…a Home Cleaning System.

The Kirby continues to be self-propelled since the Kirby G3 style created just about 30 years ago. This company keeps improving the vacuum in areas of filtration, how easy it pushes, and the availability of tools and other upgrades, as well as warranties.

Regardless of your experience with it, the Kirby upright is designed to last. The vast majority of the exterior is made from metal. The fan that drives the airflow and suction power is a high grade plastic that has an assembly of rotating curved blades for large power benefits, and it is nearly unbreakable. The mechanisms inside are practically all metal. Your self-propelled assembly is just about all metal, and that is why the Kirby vacuum cleaners last for a few years without requiring repair on the transmission. The Kirby upright vacuum cleaner you get now could be the final premium quality vacuum cleaner you will ever have to get. They are that good.

You have just one brand of Kirby sold to the public for customer use. The different models exist because they are different ages. Everybody seeing a Kirby demonstration today is seeing the same machine as everyone else.

Listed here are several of the features of the vacuum cleaner. We have already mentioned the metal exterior and metal transmission, which is called the Auto Drive.

The Kirby upright posesses eight different height settings for different grades of carpeting. It is (as far as I really know) the most adjustments of any vacuum cleaner that has fixed height adjustments. The Auto Drive self-propelled transmission makes the Kirby upright easy enough to push with just one finger.

Your Kirby upright has a compact, premium motor that produces a huge quantity of airflow but not very much sealed suction. It will be the quickness of the airflow, not the sealed suction that decides how well the vacuum cleaner will pick up dirt from your carpet fibers. The speed of the motor also decides the speed of the roller brush. The swift rotation of the roller brush ensures that the Kirby upright is cleaning your carpeting about as well as you could expect from any other premium vacuum cleaner.

Your suction hose that you can join to the Kirby motor housing (or Power Plant), is nearly 7 feet long and is used for cleaning furniture and in hard to reach places. The Kirby upright is sold with a box of tools that is one of the most comprehensive in the industry. The Kirby upright even comes with a rotating brush (called A Zip Brush) that picks up animal hair off of cushioned furniture better than any comparable attachmant existing.

The bag on the Kirby upright is heavy duty cloth. The paper bag is actually made from the same materials as HEPA filters on other vacuums. The inner liner is white and seems like cloth. But actually, is disposable. These liners leak just about no dust at all. For people with pets, sooner or later the outer cloth bag can accumulate the animal odors and require cleaning itself. The cloth comes off at the bottom and can be washed in a sink (NOT a washing machine).

While the Kirby upright is rather effortless to push back and forth, lifting it up is a new matter. The typical vacuum cleaner weighs roughly 15 or 16 pounds. The KIrby can weigh as much as 35 pounds when there is enough dirt and cat and dog hair in the paper liner. If you have problems lifting, and you have a two or three level home to vacuum, the KIrby could not be for you. Many buyers solve that predicament by having a lighter weight premium quality vacuum cleaner to do the upstairs where they vacuum much less often.
